Run the World: Houston

Original Post Date: August 30th, 2023

Oh, how I love the South. When choosing a destination for my 21st birthday, there was no doubt that I was heading to my favorite region to celebrate. I wanted warm weather, fun times, and delicious food. So where better than Houston? A city I fell n love with from the moment I stepped off the plane.

Where To Stay

The Chiefly Hotel

This hotel is new to the Hilton brand and a part of their tapestry collection. One thing I loved was this location's proximity to the itinerary events. The staff was friendly and fulfilled requests in a timely manner. I was satisfied with our suites. They were clean and just the right amount of space. If I could change two things, I’d ask for a sink in the kitchen/living room area and a door for adjoining rooms. Overall, the Chiefly would be a great place to stay on your next visit.

What To Do

Kamp

Kamp was a location I was sure I wanted to visit. After years of watching everyone add it to their itineraries, I knew it was a must-go. One of the aspects I liked the most was the inside and outside seating options. While plenty of people were there, I didn’t feel too cramped. Our waiter was attentive and assured us that we got everything we needed. The energy was high and the venue added their own flare with attractions like a fire-handling dancer. The end of the night was unexpected. James Harden’s attendance and He sent every section a bottle of his new night. Overall, you definitely want to add Kamp to your radar.

Space

I was excited to go to Space, primarily after I had heard good reviews. This spot was spacious; I was honestly surprised by all the sections they had. I enjoyed their music selections and never felt like I was just standing around. My frustrations with Space are related to their pricing. We tried to book a section that night and were told a price of $800…no bottle included. So we opted to buy just the bottle and still had a great time at the bar.

Contemporary Art Museum

Unfortunately, not everything on the list is star-studded. As someone who can appreciate artistic offerings, I was interested to see what Houston’s museums were showcasing. We ventured to the Contemporary Art Museum but left disappointed. Art is a very subjective subject, so what was featured may appeal to someone. I personally just wasn’t prepared for an exhibit that depicted human feces and inappropriate activities of children. My advice would be to research the museum you’re about to attend and consider if the current exhibit(s) meet your taste.

The Galleria

The Galleria needs little explanation. It’s just great. I love visiting new malls, and The Galleria never disappoints. They have everything you need, at every price point. Want luxury…they got it? Want your everyday favorites…they got it? If you’ve got extra time or need a quick fit, the Galleria is a great pick.

Where To Eat

51Fifteen was the location of my birthday dinner and It's located within The Galleria

It was a large restaurant with low lighting and good food. We were able to taste their short rib ravioli, the mac and cheese, and their steak tips. My only complaint would be their serving sizes; I wish they were larger. Despite that, my taste buds were satisfied. I appreciated the aesthetic, ambiance, and quick service.

All I can say is wow. Joey Uptown’s was originally not on the itinerary but ended up being my favorite dining spot. They secured my approval of service with complimentary sparkling wine, upon entrance. We were seated quickly, during dinner time with no reservation. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. In addition to the wine, their craft drinks were delicious. Everyone in our party was satisfied with their food. From impossible burgers to pasta, to steak, everything was delicious. I personally had their spaghetti with ricotta cheese. Hands down one of the best spaghetti’s I’ve ever tried. If you’re headed to Houston, make sure Joey Uptown’s is on your list.

My research on Instagram and TikTok failed me with Clutch. I will say that we attended on a weekday during Brunch, but I was not impressed. The music selection was not current, or cohesive. I appreciate a good throwback mix but it has to be mixed in well. I also wasn’t a fan of having to wait at the bar to place my order. There was one bartender working and she was responsible for taking food and drink orders, which left us waiting. We ordered a mimosa tower, but there wasn’t anything outstanding about it. I ordered the chicken and waffles, with a side of breakfast potatoes. I will say the potatoes were good and I’d give the chicken and waffles a 6/10. If you do think about visiting Clutch, I’d do some more research on the best time to attend.

Make it stand out

Presslee’s was another impromptu pick. It was different than the other choices, as it was very casual. I was glad that we went, as our whole group wanted a taste of some southern food. Now I want to make the distinction that it was Southern food but didn’t give me authentic soul food. I ordered the Turkey leg with hushpuppies and macaroni. I really liked the hushpuppies; they were slightly sweet and the perfect amount of crisp. I enjoyed the flavor of the macaroni but missed the baked texture. The turkey leg could have been seasoned more and had more juices, but overall it was pretty decent. Overall, if you’re looking for a quick option and want some Southern flavors, you may want to check out Presslee’s.

Well that’s a wrap on my most recent trip to Houston. See yall next time for another Run The World edition in a different city!

With Love,

Allie
